answer the thread question. cuz... real leather pants get pretty "atmospheric" and could get pretty uncomfortably awkward. a lighter (perhaps breathable) material would be more practical.
ok, aside from the 'real-life' aspect, in the show do you think they were supposed to look leather-clad, or is it suppsoed to be a sophisticated material?

CB said in a commentary that she and Ben wore "protective leathers", she went on to ellude that they were necessary. So I'd say that they were wearing real leathers and that it had more than one benefit: (1) to make them look hot-a; and (2) to keep them from getting scraped up during filming.
On the RL aspect, I'm sure they got hot (not as hot as Anth though) and I'm hopefull their outfits were laundered regularly. Alternatively, I'm sure that, if the pants were leather, they suffered from what we in South Louisiana call the "geaux-geaux rouge"... did your translator microbes pick that one up?

:rollin: "geaux-geaux rouge"
My translator microbes didn't get that at all but I think I get the 'drift' :thud:

Somewhere in one of the commentaries they mentioned that they were real leather and one of the reasons they had to do voice over work in post production was that the leather clothes were so noisy (when moving around dressed in them) they sometimes drowned out the dialogue. So they definitely wore real leather on the set.

:roflmao: Anyone see the Saturday Night Live sketch with Brittney Murphy...when they did Leather Man? All I could think of was Farscape. Now hearing THAT story....it's even more apropos...

Heh, heh. My first thought was, "Black Shirt, Green Shirt, who cares, as long as he has on leather pants?".
I think it was real leather. I'd like to have a pair like John's S4 leather pants with what looks like spandex side panels. That would make them flex better when you sit down, or climb in and out of modules and stuff. *sigh*
"geaux-geaux rouge"? LOL I hadn't thought about that, since they wore them in the summer heat. What do you call it when tight clothing makes you grouchy? My 3 yr. old leather pants fit mostly the same as they always did, but they make me grouchy! I've decided that the size 6 must retire...not admitting what size the new ones are. Makes me think that when you see semi-grey haired women wearing those loose fitting linen outfits you should beware - there may be more reasons they are so clad than just hiding their figure.....!!!!!!

I think I heard somewhere that there are three sets of each costume so that one can be laundered while another one is being worn. And I gues the third is for backup. But yeah, they're real leather. Ben has said that his other clothes kept getting ripped doing stunts and that the leather holds up a lot better.
I always wondered if they had the exact same clothes every season or did they give them newer ones with the same design.

So those of us making costumes out of pleather ... must remember that we cannot do stunts in our garb and get away with it.:ewink:
I have worn fake leather... and that was bloody hot...
I can't imagen what real leather would feel like!

I'm sure there's several sets of costumes for each character. I once sewed costumes for plays (strictly amateur) and you'd be amazed at how dirty the costumes get from sweat and makeup. We had to wash them after every performance.
In one of the season 1 DVDs, there's in interview with the costume designer, and in several scenes he's standing in front of a hanger with rows of John Crichton's grey pants from season 1. There must be something like six pairs hanging there. (Everyone who's interested in costuming should see this interview, by the way. Farscape's costuming is some of the most intricate I've ever seen in genre television.)
And I, too, have noted that Crichton's leather pants have nifty side panels of some sort of matte spandex. That's what makes them fit so well, and I can imagine that this makes them slightly more comfortable to wear, especially in action scenes. (Why yes, I am a serious student of Crichton's leather pants. Why do you ask?)

Real leather breathes better than pleather.

And from Crichton's pants to Scorpy's tails :D ... I hear the latter was made out of real crocodile hide. It looks rather heavy to wear. Does anyone have enough experience with crocodile skin to tell me if it is?

Yes, it is. Look at how thick it is. The leather is thicker on the back. The belly leather is softer and more pliable, being the more tender part of the croc. Scorpy wears what looks like the entire back of a croc on his tails.
My experience, to be able to make such a pronouncement? Don't laugh, I'm serious....
My Granny had crocodile shoes and bag. This was in the 70's, ok? Before PETA and all that. She lived in Alexandria, Egypt, where there was a substantial Greek expatriate population. And it was expected that the well dressed upper-class woman wore crocodile or antelope on her feet, had ottomans made from zebra and giraffe, and rugs of lion or cheetah.
Croc leather is heavy.

All these PK pants, coats, etc. What do you think they're supposed to be made of? I mean, are they any cows in the Uncharted Territories? :)
Well, I suppose it probably is some kind of material we've never heard of that looks like leather to us. :)
Just wondering.

I want to get some of Aeryn's non-leather trousers... I think they were similar to dungarees...

They must have cows in space cause all the main characters have some sort of
leather on their costumes. (If they aren't made of all leather )
I think they wanted a "look" , and there is a lot of skill in that part of the world in making leather clothes. Really if you ever get the chance to visit "Oz" , buy some leather. You won't be sorry.

leather (noun) -
1. an animal skin made smooth and flexible by removing the hair and then tanning
doesn't have to be a "space cow"... even human skin qualifies...
