View Full Version : Bugs Life [spoilers for 1.18]
OK, so I've seen this episode SO MANY TIMES, and it happens again, I see something NEW this time that I never noticed before (but maybe everyone else saw it the first time-this one isn't as subtle as some of the others). I saw Chiana jump on him and snatch Larrak's ident chip off his neck as he ran into the pod to get away. Never noticed it before. I always wondered where she got it when she produced it for John in Nerve to show what a good thief she was and why she should come along.

ya bugs life really leads into nerve with chiana stealing the pk ident chip and aeryn getting sliced by the pk commando.

The episode itself is the weakest of the whole season, imho, but its important for the following episodes. The only thing i really like about A bugs life, is that it shows how clearly "greedy" the pair Chiana and Rygel are. They break for nobody sometimes lol.

You've got to be kidding me? It's weaker than Jeremiah Crichton? Weaker than the dead chia pet on John's face?
This is the catalyst episode that set up every-frelling-thing within the series after that! It also contained a very important turning point in John's life...the first time he willingly killed someone. Yes, it was in order to save thousands, perhaps in the wider scale millions of lives from the virus, but it was still his first kill and that is, or rather was against his nature up until that point. It further showed that he does have a dark side to him, which was pointed out in TOBM when he fought Crais but never really hit upon again until this episode.
Also, very important fact..It introduced John, and US to him in leather. *snicker* Okay, not so important storywise, but I had to put that in there. :D

Ah, but you see, i generally enjoy "light" episodes a lot more than crawl- around-the-dark-looking-for-baddie-episodes. Jeremiah Crichton amused me a whole lot due to the humor, the background it gave Rygel, and because of the funny funny lines that were in it. A bugs life I wanted to watch with a lazy eye, and i would have if it werent for John sporting all that red leather :D.

Ah, i see your point now, it was important, never said that it wasnt really, but i actually always saw John as a "do what i got to do" type of guy, and he did kill too while he was infected, so i didnt really think much about the first kill situation. And whats this about a dark side? Everyone has got those. its in human nature.
Yes, it is a lead into the whole Aeryn hurt- must save Aeryn- go to PKstation- meet Scorpius- ladadidadida. But i didnt enjoy it as much as i did other episodes. there for weak IMHO.

ah, i did love the leather. *gets lost in thought* Anyone have a good picture of Mr-not-so-much-peacekeeper? ;)

The PKs death while John was infected doesn't really count now does it? It wasn't his consciousness that did it. It was the virus'. As for that dark side...Yes, we all have it. But at that point in the series, they had only touched upon his. Most of the time he was just the 'hero' of the series. Making due in a situation out of his control. With that boom, he developed into more than 2 dimensions. His character became ' more real' in a sense.
I guess if you enjoy the lighter side of shows than you wouldn't enjoy this for that fact there. And as for piccies... 8)

woah, thanks for the pics. :)
Its not that i dont enjoy the darkness and "full flesh" charactarisations. I enjoy all episodes, and think of them more as a flow and a build up and place less importance on specific episodes. You say that it was the first time, well, i had assumed he would get to that point sooner or later. Wasnt that big of a deal for me.

I love ABL. One of my S1 faves (and JC is on my very short "ugh" eps list).
I did love seeing that John would kill if pushed. Yes, he was going to get to it eventually, but it's still a big deal. it's like knowing you'll get married eventually, but when you do, it's still a big deal :D
As to the pics in leather. OMG! My DVD must have a groove worn in that part of the disc. The first time I saw ABL I had no idea what to expect. John walked out in his leather and I literally let out a whimper :) I must admit that I like him even better in PK leathers (that, and the ones he weras in Nerve/AHM) better than his usual leather get-up.

And i like the little southern accent he picked up to be more "posh" as a PK officer :D
I almost expected him to pick up a sword and tell us of his good old days at West Point ;)

You're welcome. As for him getting pushed to kill eventually, Dangermousie said it very well.
That actually wasn't a southern accent. I believe he was trying to mimic Aeryn or other the other PKs he's come in contact with. Kind of a English/Aussie blend perhaps? I think that was only to show us that he was maybe speaking Sebacean, I don't really know for sure.
You know, that would be a good question to ask Ben in November at the convention. Because when he was on the Scarran border station and portraying a PK commando, he didn't have the accent. One can only assume he had learned enough Sebacean to not 'show' us anymore.

Yeah, maybe. im not englishspeaking, and cant keep track of dialects really ;) to me it sounded the way they speak on "North and South" ( Patric Swayze anyone? )
And the other Sebacians? They didnt sound like that, did they? *cleans out her ears and goes to listen*

The other PKs have Aussie accents. Claudia has an English/Aussie accent that couldn't really be duplicated by everyone if I remember right.
As for John's...I did say trying. *snicker* But considering I grew up around southern accents, and have one myself. I can tell you for sure, that isn't one. :D

Guys ... it wasn't a southern accent and it wasn't a PK accent.
He was doing a James Bond accent. Specifically Sean Connery. From Nerve:
SCORPIUS: I am Scorpius.
CRICHTON: But of course you are...
John's line was straight out of James Bond, his delivery, phrasing and accent. (I don't know which James Bond... I used to but my memory is weak.... old age you know.)

Girl: “Hi, I’m Plenty.”
Bond: “But of course you are.”
- Diamonds are forever. Sean Connery :D
the moment i read that i had to go "D'Oh!"

The line may have been a nod to that particular Bond movie, but he didn't sound anything like Connery. LOL

To me it sounded as if he was trying to do the generic inbred snooty baddie accent. Have no idea if he was going for anything specific :)
I think part of the reason he did a silly accent in ABL is because he was still somewhat lighthearted at this stage. When he goes down to the Gammak base, he is deadly serious, as he is every single time Aeryn is in danger.
Or maybe he realized he was hopeless at mimiking :)

Well, the first time I heard the accent in "A Bug Life" it said James Bond to me. "Nerve" just confirmed it.
But that is just me.

How about this, think Dred Pirate Roberts being tortured in the Princess Bride.
Nicola
07-24-2004, 07:43 AM
Sure. But Dread Pirate Roberts never said "But of course you are." and didn't do the 007 thing that Crichton was doing (or trying to do) during "A Bug's Life" and "Nerve".
I always assumed that it was Crichton's attempt at sounding like a PK.
I really like this ep. I liked the guest stars too, the ones that had a few lines anyway. It's a shame that every single one died.
Is this the first episode where Crichton picks up a pulse pistol? There's a nice, dramatic shot of him holding the pistol when he goes after Larraq and I couldn't recall if he'd ever used a pistol before that point.

Have you noticed the similarities in the plot between "Exodus from Genesis" and "A Bug's Life"?
Sentient bug invades the ship and takes over crew members. Marauder crew lands on Moya and must be defeated or outwitted.
Although admittedly, sweaty Rygel is far less appealing than sweaty Aeryn.
In "Exodus", every one of the PK's survive, as does the Drak Queen. In "Bugs Life" only the Moya crew survive. None of the PK's and certainly not the bug.
I thought the TPTB set the two episodes up deliberately - sort of bookending Crichtons transformation. "A Bugs Life" showed (just before Nerve) exactly how much Crichton has changed. Crichton was able to deliberately kill two sentient beings - the Intelent Virus and Larraq - and all he had to say about it was "Boom".
Big change from the Crichton who desperately tried to negotiate with both the PK's and the Drak Queen.
