Though I'm aware this will appeal to only a tiny subset of our audience, I figured, what the frell, share the wealth. I've created a Save Farscape boot image for Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar). What this will do is replace the grey Apple logo on boot with the following:

http://homepage.mac.com/adashiel/savefarscape.png

To install it, first download MacBoot, a nice little freeware utility for creating and installing boot images. You may get it from:

http://ittpoi.com/macboot100.dmg

Make sure you read the instructions, warnings, caveats, etc.. Replacing your boot image carries with it a small risk of computer frellage. Recovery is fairly straightforward, but non-trivial for novices.

Once you've got MacBoot installed, download my replacement here:

http://homepage.mac.com/adashiel/savefarscape.dmg.gz

Typically, StuffIt Expander will gunzip it and Disk Copy will mount the disk image. The boot image will be inside. Drag it onto the MacBoot icon and install it.

Creating new boot images is pretty easy, so if low contrast and greyscale doesn't float your boat, you can roll your own. In fact, I encourage it. My artistic talent is pretty limited and I'd love to use a boot image created by someone for whom stick figures aren't a challenge. ;) I've got this one installed on my PowerBook. I rarely have to reboot it, but in the interests of the campaign, I'm going to start doing it more often. :P

Very cool. Some of the "ratscape" pictures of the characters would probably be very good as well.

Thanks, I'll put it on tonight. :aok:

Ha-ha.
I would use it on my iBook but I kinda like the grey apple. Besides Ive got the Farscape 1 module as desktop. and John as desktop on Windows machine and Farscape on my Pocket PC>

I adore the grey apple. Low contrast and greyscale are definitely my thing. But there's a war on! ;)

Agreed, I think it looks very classy. I was not terribly broken up to see the "Happy Mac" retire. Change is good!

Yea mac users! :aok:

Haven't tried Jaguar yet (still using 10.1.5)... but I did test run it @ MWNY. How do you all like it?

I'm particularly interested in the inkwell function, being a tablet user, wanted to see if the handwriting recognition had advanced since the Newton. :)

anywho.... good to see some mac users, another loyal group.

Jaguar is the Atom Bomb. It's really, really nice.

Lots of new features, I think it was worth the upgrade price. I couldn't believe how much I like OS X over 9.x. I went back to use it the other day and wanted to boot back into X immediately. At least it wasn't as bad as Windoze!!

I know exactly how you feel when it comes to 9.x The only reason i have to go switch back to 9.x is because of Quark and D2X (seems to run better in 9)... grumble, grumble...

I've become known among my friends as the resident Apple and Farscape pusher :)

Yeah, I was known as "MacBoy" for the longest time.

I think that if everyone in here found a good network marketing company and put this much spirit and effort into that, this board would have many millionaires in it's ranks! :)

That's all what we're doing here is, telling people about something great that they should check out. Pretty cool.

Cy! I assume you're the same one who prowls theforce.net? Hell of a coincidence if you're not, I suppose.

I just got one of the new 1.25 DPs and I'm tricking it out into a Farscape machine. Thus the boot image. I've set up a "A 5th of Farscape" boot panel starring Chiana, but I'm not entirely happy with it. It's too dark at the bottom where the boot information appears. I'll have to fix that, then next up is a login panel. Anybody interested in making some 128x128 icons? ;) I called the computer Moya, so I'm especially looking out for nice pictures of everyone's favorite leviathan.

My PowerBook is benefiting from much of this as well, but my desktop trick will have to remain on just the Power Mac. I'm taking advantage of the GeForce4 Ti (can you guess my wallet is a hell of a lot lighter now) to do fade desktop transitions every five seconds. I chose to use the character desktop images on http://www.scifi.com/freezone/farscape/dl5.html because they all have a common background. It's neat watching the characters fade into one another. Kinda irks me about that the skiffy URL is so prominent on those images. I'll have to fix that.

For my screen saver, I'm doing transitions between the ratscaper posters.

I bleed in six colors and I too fight for Farscape.

I was one of the originals! I just took delivery of a new Dual G4 and there are nine other Macs here in the house...including a working LISA.

OS X 10.2 is unbelievably cool.

Hunh. I'll be damned. The Internet's a big place, but whod'a thunk there'd be at least two Macheads using the name "cydonia", right down to the small "c". I think the other guy was even a Farscape fan. Anyway, thanks for the offer on the icons. That would be very cool!

Folks, if you want to form a Farscape Mac Users' Group, count me in! Also, the "Wanted" poster artist Ratscape is another Mac user -- naturally -- and producing a set of Farscape Mac icons is a distinct possibility.

ratscapes illustrations are beautiful and would make great icons. :aok:

I've used them to make stickers. Being a graphic designer they're in glorious full color and look amazing, especially when you use glossy paper.

I've given a bunch to friends. they love them and are distributing them throughout NYC.

I'm in Philly for the weekend and brought my "Save Farscape survival kit" and plan to distribute some stickers while I'm here.

And after all the times I got bashed for being on a Mac in #farscape, I thought I was the only one. Once again, I'm not alone.

And yes, Jaguar is very cool. I've been very happy with it except, I must I admit, I kinda miss the happy mac. Still the Farscape start-up is terrific. If we're starting a mac users farscape gang, I'm in.

Yeah! Sounds cool! Here's that boot panel I was talking about earlier:

http://homepage.mac.com/adashiel/BootPanel.pdf

Like I said, I'm not happy with the bottom portion because it makes the status text hard to see during startup. I like the general idea, though. For info about installing new boot panels, check out resexcellence.com (http://www.resexcellence.com).

B.J. Zanzibar--

I didn't forget about your icons... you'll find a link below that will take you to icon mania...

there are 5 different icon .sit files.

http://home.earthlink.net/~ortgeist/icons/

I'm still looking for a good image of d'argo's ship... grumble...

enjoy! tell me if there's a particular type of icon you'd like that you don't see in one of the folders.

also if there are any problems let me know, it's 4am here and I'm one tired little girl.

I think a Farscape Mac Users Group would be pretty cool. It's cool to be a part of another passionate community.

I used to write for Mac OS Rumors, Think Secret and MacOpinion before I got married and got busy with other things.

Good to know there are a bunch of people out there who Think Different!

cydonia, those are great! :aok: I can't wait to get home to play with them! D'argo's ship would be a very cool addition, but if you find a good picture of a transport pod I'd love to see an icon of for one of those, too. I figure that would make a good image for a removable disk. ;)

cydonia
10-02-2002, 02:39 PM
Thanks!

I was thinking the same thing for the transport pod :) I'm collecting img's of ships right now.

as soon as i get good images I'll fix them up, stuff them & throw them up @ the same URL...

Bump!

Cydonia, have you considered submitting your icons to any big icon sites? Or have you done so already? I’ve searched on XIcons (http://xicons.com/) and have found nada.

Yes! To MindFrelled you listen! Submit them and share the wealth. :)

I modified my boot image slightly so it uses the same Moya-ish brown color the forums are using. It's at http://homepage.mac.com/adashiel/sfbrown.dmg.gz

Now all I need is some of Talyn when he’s older (love that ship) the Qualta Rifle & D'argo's ship

...and maybe a Marauder in flying position:D

I’m off to figure out how to make a good Zelbinion icon

Here's two boot images that I made from the beautiful Aeryn poster:

http://homepage.mac.com/npearson/bootlogo_aeryn_nt.gif http://homepage.mac.com/npearson/bootlogo_aeryn.gif
(One just Aeryn and one with text :) )

I tried to preserve the feel of the original Jaguar boot image as much as possible... the hair in the image is the same color as the Apple logo and it's fairly minimalistic. Let me know what you think... The only problem I've been having now is that I rarely get to see the boot logo since I never need to reboot my desktop more than a few times a month!
