re: WGA strike...How will you deal without TV?

From The Wall Street Journal Online:
"The impact of a prolonged strike could go far beyond this season. The broadcast networks, already grappling with a slow, long-term decline in viewers, depend heavily on new episodes of shows to draw audiences. Without new dramas and comedies, they will have to rely on reality shows, game shows and stunt specials, a glut of which could send audiences flocking to other forms of entertainment."

Really? Flocking where?

How would you handle life without television-as-we-know-it? I am really curious, so curious that I created a survey in my blog. I'd love for you all to participate. Who knows, maybe we can learn something useful from it. ;-)

You can find the poll here.

I would seriously consider cancelling my DirecTv and just watching whatever programs I can get on DVD from NetFlix or wherever. So I would be a season behind "broadcast" tv, I can watch my favorite programs at my leisure and stop the action whenever I need to. It seems like a better way to watch television AND NO COMMERCIALS!!! Yes, the more I think about it the better it sounds. I spend waaayyyy too much time with the tube on anyway.

I'd have to reactivate my Netflix accout. I'm not going to watch all that reality and stunt TV.......I've heard B5 was a good show. I might have to find out. I need to catch up on all the eps of Andromeda I missed too.

B5 is an excellent show. Just be aware that Season One is ... less.

In fact I have been known to tell people to skip the first season, read a synopsis of Season One: Signs and Portents first, and then jump right into Season Two: The Coming of Shadows.

If you like the series (and chances are good that you will ) you can always go back and watch Season One for all the 'Signs and Portents' that only make sense in retrospect.

Have fun!

Because with Farscape, it's all new. Nothing like it before and you start thinking weird assed thoughts and you used to know you're NOT insane, but you kinda think you're not soooo sure about that anymore.

There are some episodes in Season 1 that are worth watching. "Babylon Squared" especially is a must see. "Signs and portents", "A voice in the wilderness" and "Chrysalis" are also worth watching imo.

Watching "Life On Mars" myself at the moment. I missed it during its original airing. I love Gene Hunt

Spend more time growing my vegetables, assuming that this runs well into the new year, and the days get longer.

Play more with mister the cat

See my mates in the pub more

Read all the books I haven't gotten around to read yet

re-watch the entire four series of Farscape

talk more with my friends on the internet

.....how long is this strike going on for anyways...

Nobody is sure. the studios are trying to drag it out as long as possible, to try to bring the writers to their knees. the fact that they're able to negotiate in this way is completely bizarre. The auto workers union in the states don't have to negotiate with every single car company at one time. why should the writers have to do that? STRANGE!

I plan on rewatching Farscape in its completion, as well as watching Babylon 5 from start to finish for the first time ever. (I tout the show as one of my faves, yet I've only ever seen about 60% of it.)

I also have the long, agonious task of watching Stargate SG-1 from opening to end over time as well. Same with Deep Space Nine. Now I like both shows just fine -- quite a bit, actually, though not nearly as much as Farscape, Battlestar Galactica, Babylon 5 or Firefly -- but the same friend who's watching Farscape and B5 with me also insists we get him to seeing all ten seasons of SG-1 and seven of DS9, and I think I've seen basically every episode of both already, and it's not like Farscape, where I wouldn't give a frak.

But I'll do this for him, because he's taking leaps on Farscape for me. (Yeah, new Scaper about to happen, methinks. He'll like it, I'm sure.)

What with all those DVDs to watch and books to read, I would probably hardly notice television as we know it taking a break for several... years.

I watch very little series television that I totally curl up over if I don't see it the night it debuts. CSI, Ugly Betty and Chuck were regular viewing when I had time and no better alternatives. Certainly not the way I would have fretted over totally missing a new episode of Farscape.

I guess I'll see it as a chance to watch my Christmas presents, weed out any DVDs that should be sold instead of sitting on my shelf collecting dust, and a chance to watch more Britcoms that I've been meaning to try.
